July 22. It's the 82nd anniversary of the assassination of John Dillinger, July 22, 1934.

Might need to check your math... (1934+82=2016)

Thanks. It didn't seem right, somehow, but I didn't bother to double check the addition.

I have some interest. I wrote an essay on the 1973 Warren Oates rendition for a film theory class on Westerns and Gangster Films. I haven't seen the Depp version, although he rarely disappoints given a role with some teeth. As for the man himself, it's astonishing that his bank robbing career only lasted about one year and yet he achieved such notoriety. This is no doubt due to the highly embellished folklore that sprung up about his exploits in a time of great want. Common people who were struggling, identified and perhaps even sympathized with his actions. It was a much different America at this time however. Unfortunately, his exploits helped fuel the fire that molded the FBI.

The only film I've seen is an old one. There is certainly a lot of embellishment of his short career. But, as you say, the social bandits of the 1930s hit a responsive chord with a large segment of the American population. That they're still making films about him testifies to the continuing interest in him. He seems to have had more staying power than, say, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, or the Barkers, but Bonnie and Clyde are still in the collective memory.
